Seven EV-W-K track and field athletes qualified for the section meet held on Wednesday, May 29. In order for an athlete to advance to the section meet, they must place in the top four in the individual events, or take first or second place as a member of a relay team at the sub-section meet.
Senior Alison Sogge jumped 5’0″ at the sub-section meet to earn a chance to compete at the section meet. At the section meet, Alison jumped 5’0″, earning a seventh place.
Senior Eric Schmitt ran a personal best time of 54.4 in the 400 m., placing fourth and gaining a trip to the section meet. This was Eric’s first year out for track. Making it to the section meet your first year out is a great accomplishment. Competing at the section meet and getting another personal best time of 54.2 was again exciting. Eric placed tenth at the meet.
Freshman Alison Ecker went on to the section meet in two events. At the sub-section meet, Alison put the shot farther than she has all year, breaking her record once again with a put of 33’10”. She also threw the discus well enough to earn a trip to the section meet. Her throw of 97’3″ was a personal best this year. Unfortunately, Alison did not make it into the finals at the section meet. We look forward to many more years with Alison.
Eighth-grader Danielle Babbitt jumped a record-breaking 31’9 1/2″ in the triple jump, placing third and moving on to sections. At the section meet, Danielle leaped 33’6 1/2″, making it into finals and once again breaking her record. Danielle brought home a sixth-place medal.
Our 4×100 relay also moved on to the section meet. The team, Stephanie Roos, Brenda Kuechle, Danielle Babbitt and Kendra Nelson ran their best time of 54.2 at the sub-section meet, bringing home second-place medals. The girls ran a flawless race at the section meet, bringing home fifth-place medals, and again running a personal best of 52.98.
To qualify for advancement to the state meet, athletes must place first or second in the individual events and first in the relays. Though we are not advancing anyone to the state meet, we are very proud of all of our athletes for a great season.
Our goal, as coaches is to achieve peak performance at the end of the season when we need them to be at their best. They proved that they could accomplish this with 14 different personal bests occurring at the sub-section meet. They worked hard all season and all should be proud of what they accomplished. We look forward to another great season next year!
