Crystal Lahr and Sydney Asbrook of Kimball were two of over 130 sixth-grade girls from Kimball, Foley and Holdingford that started a semi-truck, made airplanes, tested water and learned what it’s like to work in law enforcement during FLIP for girls day at St. Cloud Technical College (SCTC). FLIP stands for Fun Learning Infinite Possibliities. This one-day workshop introduces girls to non-traditional careers. The girls spent the day on the technical college campus, moving from lab to lab as they learned about aeronautics, medium/heavy truck repair, law enforcement and careers in the energy field. Funding for the workshop was provided by the Kimball Lions Club as well as other organizations. Xcel Energy and Creative Memories provided session leaders and materials. Workshop leaders were mostly women, some who are employees of SCTC or alumni of the college. “The whole idea is to let the girls know that there are no limits, only possibilities”, said Jackie Bauer, program coordinator. The St. Cloud Technical College has hosted the event for the past three years during the usual spring break for students.
