Weather: Another winter storm moved across Minnesota on Monday. This system produced little additional snow, but cold temperatures and strong winds produced blowing and drifting of snow.
Also, wind chill values dropped to 20 below zero at times and near white-out conditions were reported across parts of Northern, Southern, and Central and West Central Minnesota on Monday.
Last week was Winter Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. Of course, this is the time of the year, once again, to be prepared for the dangerous winter season that lies ahead. The Red Cross has come out with some tips to keep you safe if you are stranded this winter during a storm.
If you do get stuck in the snow
Stay with the car. Do not try to walk to safety.
Tie a brightly colored cloth (preferably red) to the antenna for rescuers to see.
Start the car and use the heater for about 10 minutes every hour. Keep the exhaust pipe clear so fumes won?Äôt back up in the car.
Leave the overhead light on when the engine is running to help rescuers see the vehicle.
Keep one window away from the blowing wind slightly open to let in air.
Also, keep your cellphone charged and with you just in case you need to let others know of your whereabouts and to be rescued. Also, make sure that you have a winter survival kit with you that includes a coffee can to melt snow for drinking water, a candle, matches, and some high-energy foods.
We should see a bit of a warm-up by the weekend. In fact, parts of Northern, Central and West Central Minnesota could hit the low to mid 30s by Sunday. Southern Minnesota could even see some lower 40s by the weekend.
As always for the latest road conditions across Minnesota, call 511 or go to www.511mn.org/.
Have a great week and stay warm.
