At its Feb. 4 regular meeting, the South Haven city council approved Karl Lexvold’s Eagle Scout Service Project. He plans to install a 16×20’ picnic pavilion with a metal roof in the City Park, on the concrete pad remaining on the site after the shed is removed.

Fire Chief Laney reported that there were two fire calls and six rescues in January. The council approved a pay raise for South Haven Fire and Rescue employees, retroactive to Oct. 16, 2019.

The council approved Public Works purchasing a new water meter. The plan is to compare the new meter with the city’s current meters over a 30-day period.

The council unanimously agreed to raise water and sewer rates: $2/month on the base water rate (first 1,000 gallons), and 50 cents/month on the base sewer rate; rates will apply to both residential and commercial accounts. The rate increase will help to offset increasing costs for maintenance of water and sewer lines in the city. A note will be sent along with February utility bills.

The council approved an Interim Use Permit for an apartment in the central business district, at a special meeting of the council Jan. 21. The permit is conditional on follow-through by the owner, James Theisen, on conditions he agreed to in January.

The usual March 3 meeting will begin at 8 p.m., after polls close for the primary election that day.
