Spotty showers possible with average temps in the 70s

After a drought-filled summer, we have started to make up for the lack of rain over the past several months.

With the rain, however, came some very strong storms. Large hail, damaging winds, and flooding were all experienced.

In Swift and Big Stone Counties, for example, 2.75 inch diameter hail was reported. Also, in Stearns and Morrison Counties over 2.00 inch diameter hail reportedly fell. Also, in Douglas County near Osakis, 1.25 inch diameter was spotted.

However, the jack point was hit near Current Lake in Murray County where 4.00 diameter was reported.

In Glenwood in Pope County, 72 mph were recorded from the storms on Saturday. There were trees down in Sauk Centre in Stearns. Many other locations in central, west central, and southern Minnesota also had wind damage.

The good thing is that we received some much needed rain as well. Many spots in the region picked up anywhere from two to four inches of rain. Tracy in Lyon County reportedly picked up 6.70 inches of rain on Saturday alone.

More rain will be very likely Wednesday night into Thursday. Temperatures will be near average through the weekend.

We have certainly gone from one extreme to another, but I don’t think too many of us are complaining.

Weather history: On this date in 1807 “the earliest known comprehensive Minnesota weather record took place near Pembina.” According to historical data, the temperature at midday was “86 degrees with a strong wind until sunset.”

Weather facts: Did you know at times heatwaves have turned grapes to raisins before they have been picked from the vine?
