St. John’s Prep students package food

Recently, a group of St. John’s Prep middle school students used their hands to help feed the world. A group of students in Mary Anderson’s sixth-grade class volunteered their time to Kids Against Hunger, an organization that feeds malnourished families across the globe.

The students spent an afternoon filling bags containing rice, soy, vegetables, and chicken flavored vitamin and mineral powder to send to families in Guatemala. Just one bag of this mixture can feed a family of six, showing the students just how much of an impact a few hands can make.

Kids Against Hunger also taught the students about the lives of those they were feeding. The sixth-grade students participated in activities which educated them about different consequences of poor living conditions such as disease, shortened life span, and lack of health necessities.

The students also learned the importance of looking beyond themselves and helping those less fortunate. Participant, Finn Jacobson-Schulte, reflected on the experience saying, “It was awesome to know we were helping someone who really needs it and having fun at the same time.” Each of the students said they look forward to packaging food again.
