State will auction surplus bison

·

The State of Minnesota will sell nearly 40 yearling and adult bison at auction Friday, Sept. 18, at Blue Mounds State Park near Luverne, Minn.

Approximately 24 yearlings (12 heifers and 12 bulls) and 12 adults (four 2-3-year-old bulls and eight cows) will be sold at the auction, which begins at 11 a.m. A preliminary list of bison for the auction is available online at www.fss.state.mn.us/pdf/auctlist09-08.pdf. The average price paid for a bison at the 2008 auction was approximately $750.

Purchasers cannot transport the animals outside of Minnesota because of the 2008 discovery of bovine tuberculosis in northwest Minnesota. Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial disease of cattle that occasionally affects other species of mammals. The state will not test sale animals this year.
