The Stearns History Museum will host a Children?Äôs Garden Camp taught by University of Minnesota Master Gardeners beginning June 13. The camp will meet each Tuesday at the museum through July 25, with the exception of July 4.
Students entering Grades 4-7 this fall will have the opportunity to work with and learn from expert master gardeners, county horticulturists, and museum staff members to spark an interest in growing the food they eat. They will plant and maintain a garden, watch for pests and animal visitors, and explore the prairie and its history.
Each week the campers will be divided into three smaller groups and rotated between different learning stations. Lessons include seed sowing, transplanting, soil composition, and garden insects.
There?Äôll even be a lesson on archeology, as they may happen upon an ancient artifact in the garden. A mid-morning snack will be provided each day, and children are invited to return harvest vegetables as they become ripe.
