We have no doubt started off the New Year with some cold temperatures. An Arctic blast brought in unseasonably cold air to the Upper Midwest, including all of Minnesota for the start of the year.
We saw a very cold airmass for the first weekend of 2025. On Sunday morning, some spots in northern Minnesota saw some of the coldest air of the season. Warroad, for example, plunged to 22 degrees below zero. Roseau was close behind with a low of 20 degrees below zero. The wind chill made it feel like 37 degrees below zero.
Across central, west central, and north central Minnesota, overnight low temps ranged from 5 below zero to 15 below zero. Highs on Sunday were in the low- to mid-teens across much of the region with some sunshine.
Looking ahead to the midweek this week, expect lots of mid-teens across the area. By Thursday, however, some locations could be near 30 degrees.
In case you are wondering, the 8- to 14-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for the area. It looks like there will be no return of Arctic air anytime soon.
I think we could all stand a little January warmup.
