Sub-zero temps followed by warming

Weather Column: It was a cold weekend across not only Minnesota but the entire Upper Midwest. It wasn?Äôt only the Midwest that was being impacted by this Arctic air mass, as this cold air pushed as far south as Texas.

Across Minnesota, the coldest spot Sunday morning was Embarrass where it dropped to -38 F.

Pine River was close behind with a low of an impressive -32 F recorded on Sunday. This was a new record low for that city.

Most of the region dropped from -20 to -30 F with wind chill values as low as -45 F. A wind chill warning was in effect for much of the region because of dangerous wind chill values for late Saturday into Sunday afternoon.

A warm front arrived on Monday helping to warm up the Gopher State and also allowing some of the snow that we received Friday to melt. (By the way, most of the region received anywhere from 3?Äù to 6?Äù of snow Friday).

This warmer air will stay with us through Friday before another system is expected to arrive for the Christmas Holiday Weekend. At this stage, some accumulation of snow is possible over the weekend. The track and timing of this system is still to be determined.

If you are doing some traveling, make sure that you keep an eye to the possibility of some slick roads at times. For the latest road conditions you can call 511, or go to www.511mn.org.

Finally, I have to wish mom and dad a happy 68th wedding anniversary! They started dating back in 1944 during World War II when my dad was home on leave ?Äì that is a lifetime of love and memories.

Have a great and safe Christmas and Holiday Season!

Weather history: On this date in 1939, many lakes across the region were finally beginning to freeze over. For example, records show that ?Äúthis was the latest date on record for Lake Minnewaska to freeze over at Glenwood.?Äù

Weather fact: Onshore breeze: A wind that blows from a ?Äúbody of water towards the land.?Äù This can also be known as a sea breeze.
