Electric energy used as a primary source of residential heat is exempt from state sales tax for the months of November-April. It’s easy to receive this tax break, just contact Stearns Electric about completing a certificate of exemption. If you have completed a certificate in the past it is not necessary to re-apply this year. Certificates on file are automatically implemented. However, should your primary source of heating change to something other than electricity, you need to let Stearns Electric know. Receiving a tax credit for electric heat when electricity is not your primary source of residential heat is a violation of the state sales tax law. If you have any questions, contact the billing department in Melrose at (800) 962-0655. Information taken from the Stearns Electric Association’s November 2003 newsletter.
