Temps drop the last weekend of January as a cold front moves in

·

I don’t know if I remember a winter that has had as much hoarfrost. We had another beautiful sight on Sunday across much of western and northern Minnesota of hoarfrost. The conditions were just right once again for the formation of this phenomenon. By the way, you don’t have to look far for hoarfrost to form as it is the same type that forms in your refrigerator or freezer.

The most common types of frost that form include: radiation or hoarfrost, advection frost, window frost, and rime. Radiation frost is what we often see that forms on the ground or exposed objects outside.

We will continue to see a series of fast-moving systems or shortwaves push across the state of Minnesota the rest of the week. We could see some light snow on Wednesday and then again Thursday into Friday. Some flurries or light snow can’t be ruled-out as well on Saturday as a strong cold-front is expected to arrive. Temperatures are projected to be bitterly cold over the weekend.

Stay warm and enjoy the hoarfrost this winter when it develops.

Weather history: On this date in 1964, the National Weather Service records show that temperatures were mild on this date across the state of Minnesota. For example, it hit “a record high temperature of 64” at Redwood Falls.

Weather facts: Did you know that April is the windiest month of the year in Minnesota, and August is the calmest month for winds? Meanwhile, January is somewhere in the middle of the months for winds.
