Acorns falling, crickets in the house, this is August first? Today was very hot and humid after an early morning rain. Now, 10 days later, we turned the furnace up to 65 degrees and I heard it kick in during the night. Take heart, the atmosphere here at Senior Dining remains warm and friendly. Some gardens are apparently producing more than their owners can use as some produce has been brought in. The diners are delighted and thankful for the bounty you all share with them. May God bless you for your generosity. The quarterly site council meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance at the suggestion of our chairperson, Anita. Personally, I hope we are starting a new tradition. “All Sports Day” found the center decorated with footballs, soccer balls, softballs and baseballs; homer hankies; sports shirts and caps. “Sporty” treats of Cracker Jacks and Babe Ruth candy bars were given to each diner. A picnic-type lunch was served. National Black Cow (root beer float) day was celebrated on Aug. 19. The seniors treated the Latchkey children and their caregivers with root beer floats. This was the last visit of the summer from Latchkey. The diners (and me, of course) enjoy their visits and their entertainment. “Bingo in a Big Way” is coming to the dining center Sept. 16. We will serve a “Bingo” meal. Barbeque chicken, Iceberg lettuce, New potatoes, Green beans, and Oatmeal cake. Prizes will be provided for Bingo. The rest of the fun is still in the plotting stage. Guess you’ll have to join us to see what surprises we come up with. On Wednesdays during the past year we’ve had the pleasure of Nunu Matua’s company for dinner. Aug. 25 marked her farewell coffee, treats, and meal with us before returning to her home in the Republic of Georgia. Nunu is a very lovely and loving lady who will be missed. Granted, communication using words was a barrier, yet I felt the language of love was spoken. The jigsaw puzzles will take longer to finish, too. Now August is exiting with a temperature of 80 degrees. What a month this has been. I’ll leave you with a joke. “A man died. When his friends saw him in his casket, one of them said, ‘he was such a great guy, I’m going to give him $100,’ and threw the bill into the casket. The next friend agreed and said, ‘I’ll give him a $100 bill, too.’ The third friend said he had found the dead friend to be a really great guy, too, and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to give him this check for $300 and take the $200.’” ‘Til next time, Rosalea Hoeft, Satellite Site Coordinator
