Turtle program at Lake Maria

·

Several species of live turtles will be on display during a program at Lake Maria State Park beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, in the park’s interpretive center. Presenting the program will be park manager Mark Crawford, who will introduce visitors to the snapping turtle, painted turtle and the Blanding’s turtle, a threatened species in Minnesota. All species reside in the park. The presentation will include information about turtle behavior and habitat, identification of turtle species, status of Blanding’s turtles in the park, and environmental considerations. “The intent of this program is to feature all state turtles, but especially to call attention to the Blanding’s turtle,” Crawford said. “Our park is one of a few locations in the state where this turtle can be found, so we need to make sure conditions are conducive for its survival.” There is no fee for the program, but a $7 daily vehicle permit is required for those without annual permits. For more information, call the park at (763) 878-2325.
