Weather grounds softball team

The unpredictable spring weather was the story for last week as the Cubs were only able to play one game out of the four scheduled. Kimball traveled to Rockford on Monday, and played the second-place Rockets tough, but came away with a 2-0 loss. The rest of the week’s schedule was wiped out by bad weather.

Kimball’s Jenny Gully and Rockford’s Karlee Simonson were the stars of Monday’s contest. Both pitchers were sharp and hits were hard to come by. Gully had six strikeouts and walked none; both Rockford runs were unearned and she lowered her season ERA to an excellent 1.73. However, the Rockford pitcher was even sharper and the Rockets defense made no errors, giving them the victory.

Kimball had hits from Tammy Kuechle (who maintained her plus .500 average), Jodine Lemke and Peggy VanNurden. The Cubs again left numerous runners aboard as they stranded seven baserunners, twice leaving runners on second and third. As fate would have it, the only two Rockford runs were scored by the pitcher Simonson who reached base twice via error.

The postponements last week caused some drastic reshuffling of the CMC conference schedule. The Cubs were forced to cancel a non-conference contest against St. John’s Prep and will now play Big Lake in a doubleheader on Monday, May 13; Holdingford at home on Tuesday, May14; Pierz on the road Thursday, May 16; and then begin Section 5A subsection play on Friday, May 17 at BBE. Thursday is the end of the regular season with the playoffs beginning on Friday, May 17.
