For being the shortest month of the year, February is packed with special events. There’s Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, even Groundhog Day. At the library we’re concentrating on the love of reading and happy hearts, with a couple of great movie offerings and an unsolved mystery or two.
Stop in the library during February “I Love to Read Month,” to see what fun giveaways we have planned for you. All patrons who check out or return books during the month can put their name in for a prize drawing. You could be one of the lucky winners. All it takes is finding a good book. Since it’s all about reading, this only applies to books, not DVDs.
Movies on the Big Screen brings you “Book Club” at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the Community Center. Rated PG-13, it features an all-star cast with Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. It’s considered a romantic comedy for folks “of a certain age.”
Speaking of book clubs, join the members of the EVAL Book Club on Feb. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the library. The discussion will center around “The River” by Beverly Lewis. All are welcome, even those who haven’t read the book.
Then, Friday, Feb. 22, Movies on the Big Screen returns with Norm of the North. Rated PG, this animated movie features the voices of Rob Schneider as Norm the polar bear and Ken Jeong as the wicked Mr. Greene. Norm travels to New York City to sabotage the shady Mr. Greene’s development plans that would jeopardize the Artic and finds some friends along the way. As one reviewer said, “a great kid’s flick with a great message.” The showing is at 6 p.m. in the Community Center.
What could be more fun than celebrating Valentine’s Day with little ones. Our toddler program, Storytime Stars, has been moved to Fridays and will next meet

Schoolroom Storytime is still looking for volunteer readers. This storytime program allows students kindergarten through grade two to enjoy listening to a good book presented by new readers and you could be one of those readers. Call the library at (320) 453-4344 for more information.
Remember, it’s not too late to sign up for the adult reading promotion, Mustache Your Thoughts. You’ll receive a great EVAL tote and possibly a sweet treat while practicing your skills as a book critic.
As for those mysteries, did you know there are many unsolved mysteries in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and we’re pleased to be able to offer our patrons books on some of the most intriguing ones. Check out the works of true crime author Robert M. Dudley of Eau Claire, Wis. The research he did for his first book “It Can’t Happen Here: The Search for Jacob Wetterling,” led to the discovery of information tying Danny Heinrich to Jacob’s kidnapping and murder. Other Dudley titles on our shelves include: “Searching for Sara Bushland,” “Cold Cases of West Central Wisconsin,” and “Two Sisters Missing: The 1974 Reker Murders.” These are definitely for those amateur sleuths out there.
