Winfred Phillips of Hutchinson died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Dassel Lakeside Community Home in Dassel. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Vineyard Methodist Church in Hutchinson with Pastor Scott Daniels officiating. Interment followed in Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson. Winfred Frank Phillips was born Feb. 26, 1913, in Kimball to Sylvenus and Ada (Loudon) Phillips. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in his faith as a youth in Kimball. He received his education at the Kimball schools. Winfred was united in marriage to Velma Juanita Hennemann in Kimball June 12, 1935. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Larry and Richard. Winfred and Velma resided in Kimball until 1946 when they moved to Hector, Minn. They lived in Hector until 1955 when they moved to Hutchinson. Winfred and Velma celebrated 68 years of marriage last June. Winfred was employed with the Minnesota Highway Department as a laborer and was promoted to area foreman in 1957. He worked in the Kimball area five years, in the Hector area 10 years, and in the Hutchinson area 21 years. He retired from the Highway Department in 1976 after 36 years of service. Winfred was a member of Vineyard Methodist Church and a member of the Kimball Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years. After Winfred retired, he enjoyed traveling and reading. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Winfred was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allan Phillips and sister Irma Hoeft. He is survived by his wife Velma Phillips of Dassel; sons Larry Dean (and Janice) Phillips of Hutchinson, and Richard Dale (and Joan) Phillips of Cross Lake, Minn.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; sister Iris (and Robert) Bergren of Edina, and sister-in-law Eloise Phillips of Bullhead City, Ariz.; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Casket bearers were Steve Phillips, Connie Skuza, David Phillips, Rick Phillips, Ron Phillips and Cathy Christenson. Organist for the funeral was Kay Hayden, and soloist Pastor Brian Brosz sang “The Lord’s Prayer”. Arrangements were by Dobratz-Hantge Chapel in Hutchinson.
