Wrestlers start second half of season

The Kimball wrestling team traveled to Howard Lake to take on HL-W-W and LeSeuer-Henderson last Thursday night. At 103 pounds, Tyler Kuechle got things started off with a pin. Also wrestling really well was 7th-grader Alex Thurber, who recorded two wins on the night. Junior Derek Orbeck kept on the winning track as he chalked up two more wins both by pins to improve his record to 9-3. Also picking up two wins was senior John Hanley, who in his second match beat the #7-ranked guy in Class AA. Josh Almgren also picked up a win with a first-period pin. On the JV end of things, Anthony Laabs wrestled well enough to pick up his first win of his career. Also getting his first win of his career was Justin Ring, who got two wins both by pins. On Saturday, the Cubs went north to the Royalton Invite to compete in the individual tournament. Sophomore Luke Schiefelbein led the Cubs with a second place finish. Luke beat his first opponent 16-0 and his second opponent with a first-period pin, advancing him to his first-ever finals. Also placing was Derek Orbeck, who placed fourth. Derek went 3-2 on the day, picking up a 17-second pin. Josh Almgren places sixth, getting two wins, both by pins. Also getting wins on the day was Ronnie Antiel at 135 pounds, and John Hanley at 171 pounds. Next up for the Cubs is the Kimball Duals Saturday, Jan. 13, at the high school. Wrestling should start around 10 a.m.
