Weather column: Severe weather moved across portions of Minnesota on Friday into Friday night. A weak EF-0 tornado hit Atwater in Kandiyohi County on Friday evening. There were many trees toppled in that part of central Minnesota. Straight line winds were also reported in central Minnesota causing some additional storm damage.
Meanwhile, in Stearns County heavy rain fell on Friday evening. There were reports of more than four inches of rain in the St. Cloud area. This made it difficult for cars to pass in parts of the city streets for a time.
Some lingering rain fell across parts of Greater Minnesota on Saturday morning. By the afternoon most of the rain had become more widespread.
Our active weather continued on Sunday. Most of the day was sunny and warm, but by late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening some thunderstorms developed across mainly southern Minnesota. A few of these storms were on the severe side once again.
A cold front arrived on Monday. This brought with it a few isolated showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures also cooled down back in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
A big dome of high pressure will impact a good share of the western half of the U.S. for the midweek and it should linger into the weekend. Look for a generally dry, but humid weather pattern to be with us for much of the period. We are also anticipating lots of mid- to upper-80s and possibly even some lower 90s along the way through the weekend.
Have a good midweek and make sure you find a cool spot and drink plenty of liquids as it is going to be a hot one!
Weather history: On this date in 1930 during the Great Depression and at the start of the “Dust Bowl era,” record temperatures were experienced all across the region as Redwood Falls hit a high of 102 degrees F!
Weather fact: Did you know that men sweat more than women? Experts say that while “women have more sweat glands, men’s sweat glands are more active.” Also, the more you sweat the more easily you can become dehydrated so drink plenty of water during periods of intense heat!
