K/EV-W boys’ golf back-to-back CMC champs

The boys wrapped up their season with three meets this past week. Oh and by the way, they also wrapped up their second, consecutive Central Minnesota Conference title, totaling 1,254 strokes; a dozen better than runner-up Pierz. Monday, May 14, they were on the road in a contest hosted by Paynesville, and Friday, May 18, they competed in their final, two conference match ups, hosted by BBE and Osakis. The boys had a great showing at Paynesville, posting a 175, and out-shooting Pierz by
one stroke to take the win. Highlight of the day was a birdie for Luke Ashbrook, on his last hole, where he posted a 42 and finished tied for second place. Other individual results: Adam Sanquist (K/11) – 44, Drew Gustafson (K/11) – DQ, Jack Bates (EVW/12) – 44, Chase Gustafson (K/10) – 45, and Ben Zipoy (K/12) – 47. The guys finished with a double-
header on Friday, starting off at BBE, where the team posted a 175, and tied with Pierz at the top.  Adam Sanquist tied for 3rd place, posting a 42, just one stroke shy of medalist honors. Other individual results: Drew Gustafson (K/11) – DQ, Jack Bates (EVW/12) – 44, Chase Gustafson (K/10) – 44, Luke Ashbrook (K/7) – 45, and Ben Zipoy (K/12) – 47. The team finished the day at Osakis Country Club, where Chase Gustafson posted a 43, and won the individual medalist via a five-way tie on a par 3 tie-break hole. Individual results for Osakis: Adam Sanquist (K/11) – 44, Drew Gustafson (K/11) – 54, Jack Bates (EVW/12) – 50, Luke Ashbrook (K/7) – 43, and Ben Zipoy (K/12) – 56.  K/EV-W’s Adam Sanquist (1st), with an average of 40.67; and Luke Ashbrook (6th), with an average of 44.83, also made the top-10 all-conference team.  Honorable mention went to Jack Bates (17th), with an average of 47.50.

“The boys wanted to win the conference and that was one of my goals for the team at the beginning of the season.  They were determined and played to win these last three meets. They have made huge improvements over the season and they deserve this title again.  We have two weeks before sections, with a couple more tournaments to help prepare us for that. Our final goal is to make it to day-2 as a team … and the way they have been playing these past couple of weeks, I see this as a very good possibility,” said an enthused Coach Zach Boser.
