Local business specializes in environmental-friendly products

Brad Matuska, co-owner of Mississippi Topsoils, Cold Spring, will present ?ÄúTurning Waste Materials into Compost?Äù at the Stearns History Museum?Äôs Breakfast Club at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 14.

Brad?Äôs passion for the environment is engrained in his lifestyle. He grew up in Pipestone and graduated from St. John?Äôs University, Collegeville, in 1995, majoring in biology. Four years later, he partnered with Math Miller to start Mississippi Topsoils. The business specializes in compost, potting soils, and soil mixtures that are available for purchase at area garden centers throughout the Upper Midwest.

Mississippi Topsoils?Äô success, however, goes beyond ledger sheets and profit margins. The company believes in environmental stewardship. Since its formation nearly 20 years ago, Mississippi Topsoils has composted more than 85 million pounds of wood waste that would normally reach a local landfill. About half this number ?Äì 40 million pounds ?Äì has been turned into compost.

?ÄúWhen you have kids, you try and figure out what kind of world they are going to inherit,?Äù Matuska said about their philosophy. ?ÄúI could go on for hours about why composting matters.?Äù Please join us for a fascinating program about how you can make a difference as well.

The program is free for Stearns History Museum members and $7 for nonmembers. Refreshments will be served. The Museum is located at 235-33rd Avenue South in St. Cloud.
