·
The Eagles softball team took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh, only to allow the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars to rally with three runs to send the game to extra innings tied at 6-6. The Eagles responded in a big way, posting eight runs in the eighth. The Jaguars responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but that was it in an eventual 14-7 Eagles’ road win in eight innings on May 5.
Eagles head coach Dave Dziengel highlighted how his team pulled out a “nice” win.
“We played good defense and Kamryn [Mathies] threw well,” Coach Dziengel said via email. “We keep playing better and better which is exciting as we go into the last week of the season.”
In that key eighth inning, the Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate and scored all eight of its runs with two outs.
Offensively, the Eagles posted 19 hits. Coach Dziengel said his top-of-the order hitters, referring to the team’s first four hitters, “really set the tone.” Laura Huering led the Eagles with a four-for-five day, followed by Alison Thielen, Zoey Schmidt, and Ella Anderson each going three-for-five. Schmidt and Anderson each drove in three runs, and Thielen two runs. Hayley Berg finished two-for-four with an RBI, and Siena Hemmesch two-for-five with an RBI to also pace the Eagles.
Mathies earned the win in the pitching circle, giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and four walks, and striking out three over eight innings.
