Fall begins with fluctuating temps

We welcomed in fall on Tuesday morning at 8:31 a.m. This time of the year, of course, is a transition time from summer to what will eventually become another Minnesota winter.

In case you are wondering, the Farmer’s Almanac says that it will be cold and snowy this upcoming winter across the Upper Midwest. They say that it will be a “cold winter with normal to below–normal temperatures in areas from the Great Lakes and Midwest, westward through the Northern and Central Plains, and Rockies.”

The Farmer’s Almanac and their weather predicting has been going on since 1818. They claim an accuracy of around 80% and use an “exclusive mathematical and astronomical formula, that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary position, and many other factors.”

We will have to wait and see what lies ahead for us this upcoming winter, but again fall is that transition time which allows us to get ready for the cold and snow!

Happy autumn.

Weather history: On this date in 1937 much of the region went “from summer to winter.” National Weather Service data shows that the temperature at Wheaton hit 101 degrees F before a cold front came through the area “causing the mercury to tumble below freezing!”

Weather facts: Did you know that fall is caused by the Earth’s tilt, and not our distance from the sun? When the northern hemisphere tilts towards the sun, we get warmer. When it tilts away, we “get colder and a time of transition!”
