Schools aren’t like they used to be, which is very true because kids are afraid to go to school because of violence. Before kids started to get their hands on guns, kids could go to school and not worry about getting shot or bullied. Now at larger schools there are metal detectors at school, cops, and cameras to make sure everyone’s safe. I think violence is common, but not as common as teasing, but teasing leads up to violence so it’s all in the same category Violence now is usually where a kid will fight or bring a weapon to school, such as a knife or a gun. For example, at the ROCORI shooting, a boy brought a gun to school and shot and killed two other students. That was only 20 miles away [from Kimball], everyone thought “it won’t happen here,” but it happened so close. Now parents and kids and teachers realize, a kid one day could get so upset that [he/she] would bring a weapon to school or try to fight the bully and may get hurt very badly, all because of bullying. Everyone realizes that you can’t stop all teasing, but you can help lower it by having teachers always patrolling the halls and have cameras that really work and have at least two cops around the area, so if something does get violent they could be right there to stop it so it won’t go to measures of someone losing their life. They (bullies) tease kids because of their strength, size, talent at sports, and sometimes just because it’s someone easy to tease. An easy person to tease is a person who won’t tell teachers, [because he] isn’t really confident of himself. I believe that violence can be stopped by enforcing rules and counseling. Many kids are afraid to stand up to their bullies, so the bully keeps doing it. So the kid thinks the only way to solve the problem is to take a gun to school or some type of object that can hurt someone. I know if kids can get their confidence they will not come to the conclusion of killing someone.
