Snow Removal Policy of Fair Haven Township

The safety and convenience of the traveling public is the main concern of Fair Haven Township. The goal of the township is to have all roads passable within a reasonable time after a snowfall has stopped. The township does not assure a completely bare road and will not sand entire sections of roadway. Users of the township roads are reminded to exercise caution and drive with care. The legal speed limit may not be possible at all times. The township will provide such control in a safe and cost-effective manner, keeping in mind safety, budget, personnel, and environmental concerns.

1. DISPATCHING OF SNOWPLOWS

The township will dispatch plows after the snowfall has stopped. Exceptions can and will be made during extended periods of snowfall. The snowplows will not be dispatched in situations that may be hazardous due to restricted visibility.

2. OPERATIONS

Generally, the clearing of roads will consist of three phases:

A. Making the road passable. Clean one lane in each direction with plow and wing.

B. Widen lanes to edge of shoulders and sanding. Sanding will be done in areas including, but not limited to, curves, hills, bridges, and intersections.

C. Clean-up. Remove ice and slush as it thaws and loosens from the roadway.

3. PERSONAL PROPERTIES

A. Damage to shoulders of the road, grass, and/or mailboxes is considered incidental to snow removal and the township shall not be held liable for such damages.

B. Township residents are reminded that it is unlawful to plow snow from driveways onto or across public roads. Piles of snow left on or near the road can freeze into a solid mass creating a hazardous situation for vehicles and snowplows. Accidents or damages caused by these actions may result in liability to the property owner.

C. Township residents are reminded to remove parked vehicles from township roadways to assist in snow removal.

D. Township plows will not attempt to remove stuck vehicles from ditches, snow banks, or any other impediments.

E. Only when directed by supervisors or law enforcement will township plows attempt to plow on private property for emergency situations only.

Questions or concerns should be directed to the township supervisors. Township meetings are the first Monday of every month unless otherwise posted or published.
