Light Up Purple initiative
October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989. Since then, October has been a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims. Throughout the month of October, local businesses, organizations, civic landmarks, and residential homes across central Minnesota are lighting up purple to raise awareness that domestic violence exists in our community. Purple is the nationally–recognized color signifying domestic violence awareness. The purpose of the Light Up Purple initiative is to raise awareness that victims of domestic violence have a voice and will be heard. The lights are a symbol that our community takes a stand against domestic violence and encourages an open dialogue about the topic.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Anna Marie’s Alliance, our local non-profit organization serving survivors of domestic violence.
“We are always looking for creative ways to call attention to this issue and find ways for community members to get more involved,” says Anna Marie’s Alliance’s Director of Development, Lori Eich. “We want to bring awareness to our community that will start the conversation, break the silence, and engage people in seeking solutions.”
Incorporated in 1978, Anna Marie’s Alliance is a 36-bed emergency shelter for women who have survived domestic violence and their children. Its mission: to provide education, intervention, and advocacy to those affected by relationship abuse with a holistic approach and anti-oppression focus. Anna Marie’s Alliance serves families across central Minnesota. Last year, more than 123 women and 96 children were provided safety at the shelter. The shelter is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
