Last week the seventh-grade baseball team finished up their season with a three-game week. We hosted ACGC on Tuesday, hosted New London-Spicer Thursday, May 18, and traveled to Eden Valley Friday. For the week, the Cubs went 2-1 beating NL-S and Eden Valley while losing a one-run game to ACGC.
Against ACGC, the Cubs fell to the Falcons by a score of 5-4. Skylor Gruba started on the mound for the Cubs and pitched four innings. In the first inning he was a little wild, walking 2, giving up 3 hits, and 4 runs. However, after that he settled down and pitched very well, only walking one and collecting 5 strikeouts. The Cubs answered right back in the first inning collecting 3 runs of their own to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Cubs had many chances in the game to score more runs, but had 4 runners thrown out on the bases throughout the course of the game. This was a rally killer each time and we were unable to overcome that. Hitting highlights for the Cubs included Devin Waldorf 2-2 scoring 2 runs, Ashton Hanan 1-2 with a double, Cody Leither 1-2, Ace Meyer 1-3 with an RBI, Gruba 1-3 with an RBI, and Matthew Young 1-3.
On Thursday, the boys hosted NL-S and overcame a 5-0 deficit to win 10-9. Devin Waldorf had a base hit in the bottom of the 7th that scored 2 runs to win the game for the Cubs. This came after Mason Libbesmeier and Matt Young both walked and got into scoring position on wild pitches. The Cubs had a trio of pitchers pitch in the game. Ace Meyer started for the Cubs throwing 3 innings. Carter Holtz then came in and pitched two innings, and finally Libbesmeier pitched the final 2 innings. After not getting a hit the first time through the lineup, the Cubs offense woke up and scored all 10 runs in the final four innings. Hitting highlights included Cody Leither 2-5 with a triple, Waldorf 2-5 with 4 RBI?Äôs, Ace Meyer 2-4 with 2 RBI?Äôs, Skylor Gruba 1-3, and Carter Holtz 1-3 with a two-run homer.
The final game of the week had the Cubs traveling to Eden Valley for a four-inning game on Friday. The Cubs played one of the best games of the year and avenged an earlier loss to the Eagles. The Cubs scored in every inning including a five-run first inning and the game was never in question. Cody Leither and Ashton Hanan combined to hold the Eagles to five runs. Seven different Cubs players had hits or reached base on walks. Hitting highlights included: Hanan 2-2 with a two- run home run and a double, Ace Meyer 2-3, Skylor Gruba 2-2, Mason Libbesmeier 2-3, and Matt Young 1-2 with a double.
For the season, the Cubs finished with a 7 and 3 record with the 3 losses being close games that could have gone either way. This was a fun group to work with and coach. I was very impressed with the group?Äôs knowledge of the game. Also, the poise that they had to battle back from multiple deficits to win games. I look forward to seeing what this group can do in the future.
