Cooler temps move in with a chance of rain and possibly snow

After some near record high temperatures on Friday and another warm day for this time of the year on Sunday, we knew the mild temperatures would come to an end.

On Sunday, a cold front pushed across the state and this brought with it some severe weather. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for much of western Minnesota as a well-organized line of thunderstorms moved out of North Dakota and South Dakota and moved into Minnesota by Sunday evening.

Some severe weather was reported in Big Stone County near Ortonville where 1.25 inch diameter hail was reported on Sunday.

In Douglas County, southwest of Garfield, a peak wind gust of
65 mph was also reported.

In addition, strong winds were reported in Yellow Medicine County near Canby on Sunday evening where a peak gust of
66 mph was reported. Some power lines were reportedly downed in that part of the state.

Also, in Mahnomen County, just south of Mahnomen, winds of 58 mph were reported there.

Cooler and drier weather returned on Monday across the area on the backside of this system. Look for some rain possible on Wednesday as a weak system pushes across the region and then even cooler temperatures for late in the week and into the weekend to follow.

Have a good rest of the week.

Weather history: On this date in 1966 records show that “an enormous hailstone crashed through a windshield in a truck near Claremont in Dodge County.” The hailstone reportedly measured “16 inches in circumference.”

Weather facts: Hail is produced during thunderstorms in cumulonimbus clouds. The larger the stones the faster they fall, and can reach speeds of up to 110 mph with the larger hailstones.
