Cubs’ rally falls short in loss to Huskers

·

After giving single runs over the first three innings, three runs in the fourth, and one more in the fifth, the Cubs’ baseball team trailed the Holdingford Huskers 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Cubs scored four runs over the final three innings, but this deficit proved too much to overcome in an eventual 9-5 home loss on May 5.

The Cubs scored its first run in the first inning, tying the game at 1-1 on a Tate Winter RBI single. The Huskers then went on to score six unanswered runs.

Trailing 7-1, the Cubs cut its deficit in half with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a Brandon Henkemeyer RBI fielder’s choice, and an Andray Stang RBI ground-out. The Cubs scored the final run of the inning off a two-out error.

The score remained 7-4 until the Huskers tacked on two runs in the seventh, both unearned, on a two-out, two-run double. The Cubs’ Ronnie Arnold hit an RBI ground-out in the bottom of the seventh to provide for the final margin.

Both teams left numerous runners on base. The Huskers left 11 runners on base, and the Cubs 10.

As a team, the Cubs finished with eight hits. Tate Winter finished two-for-four with an RBI, and Brayden Johnson two-for-four to both pace the Cubs.

Max Zoller took the pitching loss for the Cubs, giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits, two walks, and three hit batters, and striking out four over four innings.
