Cubs win two of three for week

The Kimball softball team had one of its best weeks of the season last week, taking two of the three games played for a three game win streak. The week started at Holdingford. In a well played defensive game the the Cubs found themselves on the short end of a 2-1 score going into the seventh inning. Kimball had scored once in the third inning and Holdingford scored twice in the bottom of the inning. With the game in the seventh the Cubs started the innings with pinch hitter Heather Ryan walking. Brittany Simmons then tripled to right center driving in Ryan. This was followed with hits from Amanda Kuseske, Kim Schaefer, Holly Garding, Kayla Kastanek, and Mindy Hurrle. When the dust settled the Cubs had scored seven runs to take an 8-2 lead. The Huskers got one run in the bottom of the inning but it wasn’t enough and Kimball prevailed by an 8-3 margin. Ashley Schiefelbein pitched the complete game allowing four hits and one earned run. EV-W was Tuesday’s opponent at Kimball. The Cubs were the beneficiaries of a tired Eagle pitching staff which gave up 13 walks and three hit batters. The Cubs combined this with eight hits and six Eagle errors to put up 18 runs on the way to an 18-5 victory in five innings. The Cubs scored 6 runs in the second and 9 more in the third inning. Every starter except one scored lead by Simmons and Schaefer who scored three times each. Kuseske, Garding, Sammi Stewart-James, and Ally Konz each scored twice. Kuseske had three hits to go along with three hits in Monday’s game. Schiefelbein pitched the win striking out five and not walking a batter. Combined with Saturday’s win over Royalton this gave the Cubs a three game winning streak to take to Maple Lake on Thursday.  Maple Lake is in first place and undefeated in CMC play. They showed why as they ended the Cubs winning streak by 5-0 score. The Cubs gathered only two hits in the game. A double by Schaefer and a single from Garding. Maple Lake scored all five runs in the first three innings, two were earned, and the rest of the game was scoreless. The upside for Kimball was that in the previous game against Maple Lake on April 17 the Irish had three home runs and 17 hits in scoring 24 runs against Kimball. Schiefelbein again went the distance without walking a batter for the second game in a row. Friday was to be a rematch versus Holdingford but after both teams had warmed up the game never got started as the rains came and the umpires called the game. A make-up date has not been set. This week the Cubs travel to Pierz, play BBE at home, and then go to Rockford on Thursday. Gary Riess, coach
