Lawrence “Red” Struck of Hermantown died at age 83 on Feb. 23, 2003, in Viewcrest Health Center surrounded by his family. A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Saginaw, Minn., with Father Lawrence O’Shea officiating. Red was born Dec. 31, 1919, to Ben and Martha (Duncan) Struck in Kimball. He attended St. Raphael’s Catholic Church. Red worked as a State Grain Sampler and Inspector for nearly 30 years. He served in the Army during World War II with the 127th Infantry in the Pacific theater. Red was wounded in battle and returned home in 1945. In 1946, he married the love of his life, Dulcie Scanlon. Red enjoyed hunting, fishing, planting pine trees and gardening. He taught his grandchildren the joy of agate-hunting. Red was preceded in death by his wife Dulcie in 2002, his parents, his brother Earl and his sister Ethal Anderson. He is survived by his son Robert (and Barb) Struck of Hermantown; two daughters, Jane (and Jim) Polzin of Saginaw, Minn., and Joanne (and Gene) Zengius of Cut Bank, Mont.; two sisters, Annie Ashwill of Kimball and Dorothy (and Hank) Ott of Watkins; a brother, Leonard of Princeton, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Michael, David, Ted, Pam, Tony, Seth and Alex Marie; four great-granddaughters: Brianna, Kayla, Devan and Allison; many nieces and nephews, and some very good friends.
