“Par” is derived from the stock exchange term that a stock may be above or below its normal or “par” figure. For golf, the term was coined in 1870 when a golf writer asked golf professionals what score would result from perfect play to win the Open Tournament and the writer called the number “par” for the course.
At KGC, par for the course is 72: 36 on the front nine and 36 on the back nine.
The United States Golf Association has defined the distances to the holes determining par:
• Up to 224 yards – par 3
• 225-435 yards – par 4
• 436-600 yards – par 5
KGC has four par 3 holes, 10 par 4 holes, and four par 5 holes totaling its par 72.
Players differ on what are the most difficult holes at KGC. Ratings services generally rate hole #6 as the most difficult par 3, hole #14 as the most challenging par 4, and hole #9 as the most difficult par 5.
Golfweek.com reports that, while golf has seen a great deal of progress in recent years in the improvement of equipment, the average player’s scoring has not dropped – that on a given day the average golfer would be expected to post a score of 100 on a par 72 course – such as KGC. Break 100 and you are above average.
