Weather: Much of Minnesota saw record or near record heat on Sunday.
For example, a record high temperature was broken in Minneapolis on Sunday with a reading of 85 degrees. That broke the old record high temperature of 84 degrees set on this date in 1930.
Most of the rest of Greater Minnesota enjoyed possibly the last taste of the 80s until next spring. Temperatures climbed into the low to mid 80s throughout central, west central, and northern Minnesota Sunday.
On the heels of the record heat on Sunday, much cooler weather arrived on the backside of a cold-front. This brought with it little moisture, but what settled in for Monday was a very strong pressure gradient and high winds.
A high-wind warning had to be issued until 6 p.m. Monday for much of Greater Minnesota because of strong winds gusting to 50 mph at times.
This time of the year, along with the spring, are the windiest times of the year. The atmosphere is in that transition time period as warm and colder air battle it out across the Midwest.
Temperatures will be on a bit of a rollercoaster right through the weekend with temperatures falling into the 40s for highs Friday before rising back to near
60 degrees by Sunday.
Have a great rest of the week.
Weather history: On this date in 1886 the tragic St. Cloud-Sauk Rapids tornado hit the area. Records show that ?Äúit left 72 people dead.?Äù In addition, ?Äú80 percent of all buildings in Sauk Rapids were leveled as the tornado expanded to 800 yards across.?Äù
Weather fact: Wind is the flow of gases and here on Earth it ?Äúrefers to the movement of air.?Äù It is caused by differences in air pressure.
