Watkins goes into State Tournament at #3 seed from Region 11C

Monticello game

Last weekend, at the start of the Region 11C tournament, Monticello beat Watkins, 8-6, in 13 innings. The two teams faced each other again this weekend, in a game that was far less exciting. Technically, the Polecats had 5 hits to the Clippers 2, but Monticello was unable to score. The Clippers won, 1-0, putting them in the #3 spot from Region 11C going into the State Tournament that begins next weekend.

The Clippers managed only 2 hits, both of them singles by Carson Geislinger and Carter Block. Block scored the sole run for the Clippers.

Carson Geislinger earned the win for the Clippers, pitching a full shut-out game, striking out 6 and walking 6.

Brock Woitalla is tagged with the loss. He also pitched the full game, striking out 8 and walking 1.

Michael Olson hit a double for the Polecats, and Braydon Hansen hit a pair of singles. 

The State Tournament begins Aug. 18, and the brackets have not yet been made. Games will be played in Dassel, Delano, and Litchfield this year. Watkins first faces the Carlos Cougars at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Litchfield.

Clearwater game

In their first of two games this weekend, the Watkins Clippers faced the Clearwater River Cats at noon Saturday, Aug. 12, in Sartell. The Clippers shut out the River Cats, keeping them to only two hits on the game. The Clippers won, 10-0, in 7 innings.

Kevin Kramer led the Clippers at bat, hitting a triple for 2 RBI. Brendan Ashton hit a double and a single for 3 RBI. Matt Geislinger also hit a double and a single. Dan Berg hit a pair of singles. Linc Haugen hit a single for 2 RBI, and Nolan Geislinger hit a single for 1 RBI. 

Team manager Matt Geislinger pitched the shut-out game, striking out 6 during his 7 innings on the mound.

Andrew Nefs is tagged with the loss for Clearwater. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs on 9 hits. Jacob Carper pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing another 2 runs, and Bryan McCallum pitched 2 innings.

The River Cats had only 2 hits on the game, both singles by Tyler Carper.

The loss ends the season for Clearwater. Watkins would go on to play another game Saturday, for the #3 or #4 seed Region 11C spot going into the State Tournament.
