A rarity itself, a centenarian is someone who is 100 years or older. According to census.gov, in 2005 about 70,104 Americans were in that age group. Zelda Stein is one of them. She will celebrate her 106th birthday Saturday, Jan. 17. Zelda, born in 1903, grew up near Fair Haven and now lives at Cokato Manor. Zelda’s son Don Stein says this year Zelda isn’t planning to do anything to celebrate. Instead she wants to celebrate her birthday every five years. For her 100th birthday, Zelda flew down to Arizona where her twin sons Dale and Donald (Don) reside. Don says Zelda is “alert, well, and likes to play games Rummy, Racko, Rummikub and Scrabble with family and friends.” Don adds she also enjoys watching golf, especially Tiger Woods, and she participates in the Cokato Manor activities. Zelda’s husband David Stein died in 1998. They had three children, one son Milo died a few days after birth, and the twin sons Dale and Donald. Zelda also has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Don says in lieu of a celebration cards would be appreciated. You can send cards to Zelda J. Stein, Cokato Manor #115, 182 Sunset Ave. NW, Cokato MN 55321.
